Playing shops, learning about coins and playing nicely together

Once in a while I get a load of tins and packets out of the cupboards (usually when I notice the cupboards are in need of a good wipe over) and put loads on the kitchen table, grab the small plastic shopping trolley and Edie’s baby (Bunny). I then raid Bealer’s change stash for some coins for the children to use and announce to them that it is time to play shops. We rummage through the dressing up box for some grown up items and a couple of purses.

I then leave them to it while I clear the cupboards out and listen to some really funny little conversations ‘Hello Sir’(Morris to Edie) ‘Ah yes the noodles that will be FIFTY POUNDS!’and some random exchange of coins or Edie saying ‘Yes I have a lot of things on my list today I will need to buy some olives for my baby and a big packet of chick peas to take to my Granny’s'…

The kids learn a lot as I take a few moments to show them where to find the denomination of the coin, which ones are worth more, where to find the price tag of the item,Edie usually ‘writes’a shopping list. The engage in lovely role-play for ages and I get to be involved with their play but while doing something to keep the house in order too.

I only posted this because I just managed to get some old pics off the camera (thanks yet again to Libby for inspiring me to bring this blog alive with piccies) but it occured to me it might be useful to someone somewhere.
