Just found a `snake` by my front door, about 12 ins in length, thin and a bronze colour. Very active when we tried to pick it up to move it. Moved it to a more suitable area in the garden, not seen it since. Any ideas what it might be ?

Was out walking my dog yesterday when she nearly trod on what i think might have been a young grass snake -only about 4 to 6 inches long, light brown with what looked like 2 yellow spots on the top of it's head.have walked down that bridle path between Blaby & South Wigston in Leicestershire for years but this was my first sighting.

6th august 2011
hi, last week took the lid of my compost bin to top up and a brown snake dissapeared into the depths, unsure of the species i watered down the compost,(mostly grass)and a smooth snake in excess of 2ft 6inches slithered out the base and into the undergrowth,in hindsight now knowing what it was i wish i let it be,still i will leave the bin alone and it may return.i live in wimborne dorset close to woodland and my garden has an abundance of toads.it was nice to see it .paul.

Took my Granddaughter to Iceni Village in Norfolk, while roaming around the gardens to the old church she noticed something moving in the grass, it was a snake, about 9" long and quite thin, although it moved incredibly fast, didn't have chance to take photo, watched for about 4 minutes, then 'lead' it to the undergrowth for safety (it's and ours!), found out later it was a grass snake. Lovely to see.

I saw at what i assume was a baby grass snake yesterday swimming across the water in a placid river area in THROOP, BOURNEMOUTH but i've looked up and found that baby grass snakes usually hatch late summer yet this one was very small (maximum of 7- 8 inches and barely 1cm wide) and was thinking this is early for new borns?

Anyone care to interest me? :)

grass snakes about end of March. Black and yellow V on back of neck, but body grey green. This one very agressive hissing and stabbing at me to bite. don't know male or female, about 2 feet long. Must have just come out of hibernation as it did not disappear it stayed holding it's ground and hissing (quite softly)
