Amby Nature Nest and Moffii Oberon Baby Hammock: An exception to the frugal pregnancy rule?
I can’t believe how generous people have been with giving away their baby clothes, bottles, maternity gear, moses baskets, towels, baby baths, blankets, sleeping bags, toys, bibs washable nappies etc.
All this has been kindly passed on to me before even sending out an official announcement that I’m trying to have a frugal pregnancy/eco-baby to the 10 or so friends who have had babes in the past couple of years for anything they would otherwise be giving to charity/Freecycle.
I’m *so* grateful but also understand that for those who don’t plan to have any more children outgrown baby gear can accumulate so quickly and can easily clutter up one’s home so it fdoes feel really nice to pass it on.
The one exception to the ‘only 2nd hand baby stuff for us please’ rule might have to be the product I found myself drooling over a few nights ago. I can’t quite recall how I managed to stumble across it (I think it was via either an online stockist of reusable nappies or a similar shop having searched for TENS machine hire). ANYWAY I found myself looking at pictures of happy babies sleeping soundly in a specially designed baby hammock instead of a crib, a moses basket or a cot. We have been given a moses basket which I now intend to put to good use when the little one is awake and just kicking around. Instead of having him/her on a play mat where its bigger brother & sister could accidently fall on it I’ll just lug it round the house with me when I’m attempting to get on with chores in another room
The theories with the baby hammocks are that a baby is snuggled into a hammock which more closely mimicks the movement and position of the in-utero sleeping quarters, the baby’s own movement on waking and waving their arms & legs around will rock them gently back to sleep, they don’t develop ‘flat head syndrome’ which one of my twin babies did from always having to sleep with the head to one side in its vast draughty cot when they were a miniscule 5lb baby, the thing is light-weight and portable so Titch can sleep in its own bed when the family is staying elsewhere overnight, and it doesn’t take up loads of room.
I’d love to speak to someone who has used this instead of a moses basket, crib or cot to see whether it is as lovely as it sounds. For £150 it is a lot of money but this price compares very favourably to the huge fortune one could choose to spend on a new baby. I also figure the small mountain of donated items in the corner of the room here behind me has easily saved us well over £150 so I feel very much entitled to treat myself and my tiny stranger at least the option of having a good night’s sleep occasionally.

I just looked on ebay and there are a few second hand in Oz anyway..might be worth a thought and then you’ll only need to but the sheets/mattress etc. I’m sure it would all be washable wouldn’t it?

Hi
I have the Moffii Hammock which is potentially for sale if you might be intersted. My son is five weeks old but is really heavy (dropping almost to the floor in the hammock already!) and am breastfeeding so he often sleeps with me so it has hardly been used. It is the silver frame and i also have two futon covers and two sheets…it also comes with the ceiling hook.

Don’t have one of those hammocks but Felix sometimes ends up asleep in big adult hammocks here - they are marvellous for putting him into deep sleep and easy to rock if he wakes up. And even a strong wriggly 8 month old boy can’t get out of it (though I’m always nearby) so a newborn would probably stay quite snug. Of course they might get smothered which is not desirable I guess (ha ha ha mad Mum laughter). Anyway, I think you might be able to use an adult one or make your own out of a sarong or something to stay frugal. Get sewing or crocheting Ackers.

I am trying to find the Moffii Oberon Hammock. If any one has one and wishes to sell I would be very interested in purchasing it. I see that Penny Cooper posted on Sept. 30, 2007 that she had one she would be interested in selling not sure if that is still an option but if so please contact me. I live in the states and have been unable to purchase the Hammock online due to no one being able to ship to the states! I can be emailed directly at jananotice@hotmail.com.

I have recently looked at the baby hammock stand too. It is indeed lovely.
couldn’t resist the buy at a second hand shop for only 5 euros!! and the small bed is in storage just in case.
But… a/ if the baby gets a little bigger and bouncier, how sturdy and fall-prove will the stand be? It also has the possibility of inserting a bungee chair, but I know how rough even a half year old can bounce in a bungee chair and don’t think the stand will hold that weight and energy.
b/ my dear friend and mother of 2 Agnes told me that some children are not into the hammocking at all, need more stability than the floaty feeling the hammock gives them. She tried the hammock for the first baby, it turn out it was a baby that needed the bundling up more. So, I will wait for my baby to arrive next month, and see what he needs first.
We have a hanging basket crib though

I have the moffii hammock. I had it shipped to California from NZ. My baby LOVES it and I love it. The best thing we bought for our baby. It looks really cool, takes much less space than a crib and it just is so comfortable. I am very sad as tonight is the first night my baby is sleeping in his crib as he’s grown out of the hammock. He’s 7 month and 22lbs. I wish they made them bigger so that my son could sleep in it for a little longer.
Penny Cooper - When my son was about 3 months (I think!) I decided the hammock was too low, and I had to bend quite a bit to get him in and out of it - not great for my back. We just made the chain half the length and it did the trick.
For anyone who is worried how safe they are, please do not worry. They are very safe and it’s very difficult for a baby to pull himself or herself into a sitting position or to actually fall out. This never happened to me despite the fact my guy is very strong and sometimes he kicks frantically.
If you are thinking of getting one, go for it.

Hi there everyone,
I just stumbled on this post as I am looking to sell my Moffii Oberon stand and hammock. The stand is cream and I have two mattresses (one never used) that go with it. There is also the door frame hook, though I’m not sure if we still have the ceiling hook (think hubby left it in our rental house!) If anyone is interested, please email me at tmnutley@hotmail.com. I’m based in Scotland :0)

I think the baby hammocks are a great product. They work really well and the comfy fit and motion seem to quiet fussy babies. I highly reccomend these as an alternative to cribs.
