I have been doing this for a while. If you have time (ha ha) try to separate the recipes into themes, such as "family midweek meal" "desserts/cakes" "soups" "summer lunches" adn have separate folders for each. it makes finding a recipe easier than just flicking through heaps of loose pages. I use those plastic pocket folders and put the mag pages in those (easy to wipe clean, no rips etc). I used to just put all recipes in there - now I have separate file of "used and will re-use" type recipes...

Hi I hope someone can help me. Today I let out one of my dogs (thankfully not both) and she was sniffing something being quite weary of it so I went out to look and there it was a rat! I think a cat may have attacked it as it had a bloody eye and was just lying there, the most movement was when it lifted its head and looked around and put it back down. There is now a box over it to stop my dogs getting to it but I feel awful for leaving it there when I suspect its dying. My boyfriend has no problems with things like these and also enjoys to hunt but he is out for the night so do I leave it under the box for the night to die on its own?

Actually we buy cereal value brand from our supermarket as we found out that it contained less sugar and salt then the other fancy brands. So it's for the best, reading labels is always a good habit.

Thanks for the great advice! In the end this page was most useful because it prompted me to "go hunting". Sure enough, I found a bag of potatoes had slipped off the back of the shelf and gotten lost behind the cupboard. It was full of mushy potatoes and dozens of the little devils! Out to the bins, and feeling much better. I also made a bowl full of 1/4 c lemon juice and a tablespoon of maple syrup. Microwaved it for 20 seconds (to get it to mix better). Swirled in a splash of dishsoap -- I held it up near a fly and he immediately jumped in. DOA. I will leave the bowl out overnight and (fingers crossed) I will get the stragglers. Good luck to all!

@Fergus - I didn't no which I regret now as we left the house the year after and it had taken root really well - sending up loads and loads of shoots which we could now be passing on to others to make their own dens.

@Jonnyb - You're right on both counts it helps to preserve the playdough after little hands have played with it and it also prevents really little kids from wanting to eat it!

I tried a number of methods but in the end, the simplest proved the most effective - half a glass of sherry (using a sherry glass) with a small spoonful of honey and a shot of washing up liquid. No need to cover the top of the glass or use a cone - the flies walk down the inside of the glass jump in and within seconds they're dead. A dozen drowned within half an hour in our kitchen (which was most of them!)
