How to recognise meningitis symptoms in children and babies

A sobering story of how deadly meningitis can be

Today I was in the supermarket checkout queue with my twins after their first ever swimming lesson. We were all tired and grumpy and my daughter was pulling her brother’s hair and wouldn’t let go. The woman in front of me said to my girl ‘Oooooh that *hurts* when you pull hair!’which shocked the overtired tot so much that she started wailing. The poor woman was mortified and immediately tried to get Edie to cheer up by asking her all about swimming. I told the woman I could tell she was a parent as she had such a lovely manner with my child and asked her how many kids she had. I was unprepared for the response that she now had two but three years ago she was mummy to three.

Not being one to shy away from such topics I told her how sorry I was for her unimaginable loss and asked how old the child had been and what had happened.

She showed me a picture in her wallet of the most beautiful child I have ever seen and told me her name was Emily Davidson and she had caught meningitis when she was 7 but she would have been 10 years old now. Obviously I was weeping by this point.

Apparently Emily was her youngest child and was so hot and poorly that she phoned the doctor and NHS direct who both advised paracetamol and plenty of fluids. The next morning she found her dead in her bed.

What a story. I couldn’t believe it as have never really thought of meningitis as something which could actually harm my children –just assumed it would be unlucky others who would have their lives blighted by grim tragedy.

As a tribute to this lovely brave woman and her poor dead child I’m going to type out some info I have on a card in my file about mengitis symptoms.

Her parting words were ‘If your kids ever have a terrible fever take them to the hospital and don’t take no for an answer’.

Meningitis Symptoms in Babies:

  • Fever –possibly with hands and feet feeling cold
  • Refusing feeds or vomiting
  • High pitched moaning cry or whimpering
  • Dislike of being handled,fretful
  • Neck retraction with arching of back
  • Blank staring expression
  • Child is difficult to wake, lethargic
  • Pale blotchy complexion

Meningitis Symptoms in Children &Adults

  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Light aversion
  • Drowsiness
  • Joint pain
  • Fitting

NB:Some bacteria that cause meningitis can also cause septicaemia (blood poisoning). Septicaemia can develop quickly. The spots or bruises do not turn white when pressed. The rash must be taken seriously &a doctor called immediately.

Always keep a note of your doctor’s name and number in your wallet and also the location of the nearest hospital with emergency facilities.

A cure for minor bumps and grazes

We keep a towelling covered cold compress (bought from Tescos about two years ago for £4) in the top drawer of our freezer.

It is worth its weight in gold when it comes to soothing a poor howling child who has whacked or grazed their head/face/eyebrow/knee/elbow/ankle bone/nose/finger on something hard/sharp/pointy/stony/concretey/car-doory.

Usually my kids will manage to get the words ‘Iiiiiiiiiiii-neeeeeeeed-aa-collllllllllld-commmmmmmpresssss!’out between heart breaking screams and then almost as soon as it is applied the tears dry and we no longer have our finger poised ready to dial for an ambulance.

(A little teaspoon of Calpol does seem to complete the recovery)

Lunch boxes need ice packs

Whoops. Deary me I think I may be awarded this week’s Amateur Parent award for not knowing/thinking/guessing that all other parents send their kids off to school with a frozen ice-pack inside the children’s lunch boxes.

So far this term my two have had ham, tuna and yohurts all left to brew at room temperature (it has been hot AND their pre-school classroom is a sweltering portacabin). Am grateful they just have mild colds and not full blown botulism this week.

Why does nobody tell you these things?

Keep the stalks on when picking fruit

Janet (my legendary new aquaintance) tells me that when I pick the apples from our tree (Cox’s apparently according to Janet) or the tomatoes &chillis from our plants we should keep a bit of stalk attached which will help the fruit to keep.

Removing the stalk when picking creates a wound in the fruit and will be the point at which infection or moulds enter it. If you wish to keep fruit after harvesting you need to keep the stalks on.

Janet wisdom –plenty more to come when she returns from her 10 day walking trip to Bulgaria I hope.

Cheating with rice

When living the high life in London Darren and I discovered that Tesco’s sold frozen rice in portion sized bags to be heated in the microwave and served at a moments notice (usually with a chilled curry). We’d be horrifed when we didn’t have any in as the thought of COOKING some rice (and draining it as well mind) was far too much effort…

These days I just cook oodles of rice whenever we have any (like tonight),use what we need and then immediatly run cold water through the rest of the collander. After my dinner when I’m putting the things in the dishwasher I chuck a couple of portions into the freezer in a tuppaware with a bit of masking tape on the lid written in pen ‘Rice’. When rice is required all you have to do is zap it in the micro for 3 mins.
It sounds obvious but I just thought I’d jot it down in case it hasn’t occurred to everyone. Unfortunately for me my son hates rice which is a shame as could produce so many easy kiddy meals with this frozen treasure (rice &tuna &veg, rice &sauce, rice &veg curry, rice with grated cheese on top)

[NB:I do the same with mashed potato - make loads more than we need and then pop little mini portions of it in the freezer to accompany something the kids are having]

A cure for arachnophobia

I am not a big fan of spiders. In fact they paralyse me with fear or send me into a screaming loon. When the children were 18 months old I ran screaming from their room leaving them alone with a huge great big hairy one. Nice work mummy.
Since moving to the country I am less frightened by them because there are so darn many of them –there is usually at least one big spindly legged chap in each corner of the house.

The best cure apart from moving to the countryside is this most amazing gadget any girl could wish to own:

The Lakeland Spider Catcher

Oh thank you Lakeland! Thank you so very much for releasing me from spider hell. Why just this very minute I was walking up the stairs to bed,Darren is out with some Worcestershire geeks, and there on the ceiling preventing from entering the bathroom is a whopper –the kind that has great googly eyes which look like extra legs. What to do!?

Be brave Ackers, get The Spider Catcher gadget, check the batteries for maximum vacuuming strength, get a stool to stand on so you can reach from a distance (I think having one that size land on my head may result in a very bad very loud reaction),grit your teeth and catch that spider!

Scary stuff but not with Lakeland’s product of the century. I’m going to reward them with a link to their shop from this very site.

Seedy Wheat-free Flapjacks

I tend to make these to have in the house instead of biscuits as my son and I both have a slight wheat intolerance. They are utterly scrummy and take about 5 minutes to make,16 minutes to bake. They are also the thing I always take to someone’s house as will usually have forgotten to buy something and anyway people like homemade stuff. These can be made as you are getting the family into the car they are so quick and so easy.
Admitedly they are laden with sugar and lovely butter so not to be munched on throughout the day!

(I never weigh the quanitities I just do it by sight and if I don’t have enough fudgey sauce to mix in to the dried indredients I cheat by adding a little more warmed golden syrup)

Ingredients:

  • Approx 1 tablespoon of butter
  • Approx  1 tablespoon of  golden syrup
  • Approx  1 tablespoon of dark brown sugar (or any other sugar if you haven’t got brown
  • A handful of  jumbo oats
  • A large handful of porridge oats
  • A large handful of ready break
  • (Optional) Some raisins
  • (Optional) Some sunflower seeds
  • (Optional) Some pumpkin seeds
  • (Optional) Some banana chips
  • (Optional) Some coconut flakes

Method

Melt the butter, sugar and syrup together over a low heat (takes about 5 minutes) until a lovely rich, oozy fudgey sauce.

Pour the sauce over all of the dry ingredients and mix vigorously until everything is well coated.

Grease with butter a round cake tin with a removeable bottom and pre-set the oven to 180 degrees Centigrade.

Squash the flapjack mixture into tin and put in over for 16 minutes.

Take out of over, leave in the tin but score the flapjack circle into 8 pieces.

Yum (but do brush your teeth well afterwards).

How to start selling on eBay

It’s not even funny how much stuff I have piled up in this room behind me waiting to be sold on eBay –it looks like at least 20 of those huge blue Ikea bags mainly filled with outgrown children’s clothes but also a lot of things we no longer want fetched down from our loft when we moved here 10 weeks ago.

I feel a bit overwhelemed by the enormity of the task and have a number of unaswered questions which are stopping me from pitching in and getting on with clearing out the teetering mountain of clutter.

  1. How to do the job systematically and methodically? (eg. organise clothes into seasons and bundles to see what should be sold now as job lots, then photograph, then write descriptions, then set sale period etc etc)
  2. How can I keep track of what I’m selling, postage charges, who has bought what and where to send to?
  3. When to wrap things up ready for dispatching and what to do with items which don’t sell first time round (try to sell again on eBay? have a car boot sale in a few weeks time? take to charity shop?)
  4. Is eBay the best place to sell books –apparently Amazon is a better place as many more people searching there for book titles already.

Oh bless my Darren he’s sent me a comment that simply says

http://pages.ebay.com/blackthorne/pro.html

It appears to be a lovely piece of software to help kids like me sort myself out from the beginning with selling tons of clobber on eBay. Good man.

Routines:Morning and Evening

I have started following a lot of the good advice given out by the (US centric) FlyLady. A lot is extremely prescriptive but works well as tried and tested set of routines for those trying to keep a house running smoothly.

Morning Routine

1. Get up and weigh
2. Shower and get dressed up to shoes, fix your hair and face
3. While you are in the bathroom Swish and Swipe (the loo and the basin)
4. Grab a load of laundry and start the washer
5. Check your calendar for today’s activities
6. Empty dishwasher to start your day
7. Eat something good for you and take your medicine and vitamins
8. Drink your water.

Evening Routine

This is the most important routine of your whole day. It helps your morning start off on a less stressed foot.

Start right after dinner. Don’t wait till the last minute to do this.

1. Lay out your clothes for tomorrow
2. Take a few minutes for yourself
3. Check your Calendar for Tomorrow’s Events
4. Spend 2 minutes clearing off your Hot Spots
5. Shine your sink
6. Wash your face, moisturize, brush your teeth and floss
7. Go to bed at a decent hour
